Types of Trauma:

  • Acute trauma: single incident, e.g. car accident, 911, sexual assault

  • Chronic trauma: repeated exposure, e.g., community violence, domestic violence, verbal/physical abuse, bullying, ACES

  • Complex trauma: results from exposure to severe stressors within the caregiver system that are repetitive and prolonged; results in changes in brain, mind, body, emotions, and relationships.

  • Transgenerational or intergenerational trauma: physical or psychological effects of trauma experienced within a family unit over several generations

  • Historical trauma: transgenerational trauma experienced by a specific cultural group as a result of being systematically oppressed
